Capturing the essence of your school or college

It’s important we plan the session to create a wide variety of images to showcase your Sixth Form. There’s lots of different subjects, settings, activities and values to capture. Whether it’s the core curriculum of English, Maths, Sciences and Humanities, or creative subjects like Art, Drama and DT, social spaces, sports, pastoral care or independent learning; we need time to incorporate all the elements that complete the picture of life in your Sixth Form or college. Click the images below to view a few ideas to incorporate when planning your photography. These are a few suggestions or commonly occurring themes, but of course every education establishment is different and we can cater to your specific curriculum.

Classroom

General learning

It's great to capture a variety of natural and posed photos in a typical classroom environment. These photos work well across a range of subjects, and showcase happy and engaged students in a nourishing learning environment. It's also of benefit to create a few photos of students engaging with teachers or students working well together.

Science

Biology, chemistry & physics

Set aside at least 20 minutes to capture the sciences - have a number of experiments set up and ready to go. Try and showcase all three sciences by using various apparatus such as bunsen burners and test tubes, titration set ups, microscopes, dissection, electric circuits, prisms and Newton metres.

Maths & numeracy

Confidence with numbers

To help maths lessons stand apart from other classroom lessons - such as English, humanities or languages - include use of some props such as whiteboards, trigonometry aids, calculators or students interacting with the smartboard.

Art

Creative learning

Include the art department in your planning as they always make for colourful and vibrant photographs. Have students working on their project, such as painting, collage or sculpture. We can always stage some scenes by having students pretend to work on already completed artworks.

Computer science

Laptops & iPads

A visit to a computer science classroom doesn't need to take too long. We can capture students working either alone or together, or with support from a teacher on your school computers. As well as working with a screen, you could showcase your programming curriculum by having some students interacting with something like Raspberry Pi hardware.

Music

Playing instruments

Perhaps you have a school band or orchestra that could be assembled during lunch for some performance photos. With this we can show both the full scale of the orchestra, and also zoom in for individual performances. Perhaps also there are one-to-one lessons happening throughout the day that we could also capture.

Sport

PE & Games

Allow a bit more time to capture the range of sport offering within your school. Perhaps you have expansive grounds with various pitches, astroturfs, netball courts, swimming pool, climbing wall, gym and sports hall, There's lot of different spaces and activities we can capture to showcase your schools sport provision.

Design Technology

Woodworking skills

A visit to the DT department is always worthwhile when planning your Sixth Form photographer visit. Practical subjects such as DT, textiles, food technology or other hands-on lessons work really well in pictures and keeping students engaged.

Friendship & peers

Social interaction

Friendship and socialising is an important aspect of life in school, and can make for some wonderfully engaging and positive images. I aim to capture a variety of natural and posed photos showing friends having fun and the joy of school. Whether it's simply a group of friends together, engaged in conversation and laughter at break or lunch, seated on a bench, in a breakout area or walking around the school.

Performing arts

Drama & dance

Perhaps consider staging some photos to show the performing arts provision of your school. Whether it's a dress rehearsal, drama lesson, dance club or full on school production, they always make for great photos to show the creative spectrum of your school.

Pastoral care

Head & school leadership

Lots of Sixth Forms like to include some images of the head of sixth form or leadership team. Whether this is a portrait to use as part of a written welcome to the college, or interacting with students around the school to show the pastoral element of the leadership. You may also have a specialist pastoral and support team you would wish to showcase to show your student support services.

Media & production

Photography & video courses

Many Sixth Forms offer a range of media courses, whether they are photography, music or film production - they are great subjects to include as they always make for engaging images

Other considerations

When preparing for your Sixth Form photographer visit please ensure that full photography permissions are checked and students are briefed on expectations for the day ahead.

Classrooms and learning environments to be captured should be prepared to minimise unnecessary clutter and school displays should be neat and vibrant.

When planning your Sixth Form photographer visit ensure that the day doesn't clash with any disruptive events such as external learning trips or examination days.
