The Brief

LifeArc regularly commissions me for a range of photography, including headshots, corporate team imagery and conference coverage. For this project, the brief was to create a cohesive image library for four of their research centres based at universities across the UK.

The challenge was to photograph each centre in a way that felt consistent and connected, while still reflecting the individuality of each location and research team.

The Approach

The commission involved travelling to four university research centres:

  • Cambridge

  • Liverpool

  • Newcastle

  • Edinburgh

At each site, the aim was to capture a complete visual set that could be used consistently across LifeArc’s website, communications and reporting.

Working within active research environments required a calm, flexible approach, careful scheduling, and close collaboration with staff to ensure laboratory work could continue safely and uninterrupted.

The Photography

At each research centre, we photographed a similar range of imagery to ensure visual consistency across the four locations:

  • Group photography of research teams

  • Portraits of key staff and leadership

  • Professional headshots

  • Scientists working in laboratories

  • Research environments, equipment and workspaces

  • Exterior shots of each centre and its university setting

The photography balanced technical accuracy with approachability, presenting the science clearly while keeping people and collaboration at the centre of the story.

The Outcome

The final imagery provided LifeArc with a coherent, flexible image library representing their research centres across the UK.

By maintaining a consistent visual style while responding to each location, the photographs help communicate:

  • The scale of LifeArc’s research activity

  • The expertise of the teams involved

  • The collaborative nature of university-based research

The images are now used across digital platforms, internal communications and reporting, supporting LifeArc’s wider mission and ongoing work.
